To my mother,
Rose “Connie” Adler (1922–2005),
who shared her love of food and cooking with me
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I’ve always been a passionate person. I’m passionate about faith, family, and food, but even I am awestruck that my love of cooking and eating would become part of my writing career. That said, no book is accomplished by one person; it takes more than a village, and in this case, it required the talents of multiple people from both coasts!
Sydny Miner assembled this entire project with great professionalism and efficiency, being certain that it always had my touch on it. Thank you, Sydny. It was an honor to work with you.
Jenna Bush reconstructed the family recipes I’d never bothered to write down. I handed her a list of ingredients with instructions like: “Add zucchini and tomato juice and don’t forget the garlic. Oh, and there’s bacon in there too.” Somehow Jenna managed to carefully reconstruct them into real recipes that make sense in every way.
Cyd McDowell and Courtney DeWet, our food and prop stylists—WOW!—food never looked so appealing after these two talented women worked their magic. (I need to mention that my table never looked that good, either.) All that beauty and eye appeal came to life through the camera lens of Tina Rupp.
Speaking of women with cameras, Stephanie Dyane is the photographer who took the photos of my children, grandchildren, and me. She had the patience of a saint, herding us all together. And I don’t want to forget Tim Archibald and his crew, who took the cover photo.
A huge note of appreciation to Shauna Summers, my editor from Penguin Random House. I am blessed to work with her. She somehow manages to bring out the best in me. Nor can I forget Theresa Park, my agent from Park Literary & Media. She has given me a special gift—her unfailing and continued belief in me—what a difference that has made in my life and career.
And last but never least, I want to give a shout out to Adele LaCombe, my daughter and CEO, as well as Ashley Hayes, my brand/marketing manager, both of whom worked tirelessly to keep me on task. I especially enjoyed going over my recipes with them, which spurred wonderful family memories and plenty of laughter.
I can say without reservation that a great deal of love, talent, and passion went into this project from everyone I’ve mentioned. Now it’s your turn to read, cook, and enjoy these recipes from my heart to yours.
